Illuminating Brand Identity: How TLS Crafted Lululemon’s Flagship Bespoke Architectural Lighting

Modern retail architecture no longer relies on static store layouts or grid-based troffer lighting. Today’s flagship spaces now serve as living, experiential brand hubs where geometry, acoustics, and illumination intersect. When Lululemon unveiled its new Canadian store concept at 1035 Sainte-Catherine Street West in Downtown Montreal, the athletic apparel leader needed an architectural lighting solution that mirrored its sleek, organic, and movement-focused ethos.

To bring this creative vision to life, Lululemon selected TLS Architectural Lighting to manufacture a custom ceiling installation powered by LumiCloud™ Bespoke.

This project demonstrates how custom tensile lighting systems bridge the gap between ambitious spatial design and structural feasibility. LumiCloud™ Bespoke solves critical architectural lighting challenges, seamlessly combines acoustic diffusion with illumination, and scales across premier retail environments globally.

Rethinking Experiential Retail Lighting: The Downtown Montreal Flagship

Spanning 11,600 square feet across two dynamic levels in Montreal’s Golden Square Mile, Lululemon’s new flagship represents a major evolution in retail design. The space operates as both an expansive retail store and a high-energy community destination. Designing light for multi-functional volumes requires balancing visual impact, functional brightness, and human comfort.

Standard downlights and harsh linear fixtures create uneven light distribution, unwanted glare, and visual clutter across high ceilings. Flagship environments demand shadow-free ambient illumination that flatters apparel merchandise, enhances human skin tones, and draws pedestrians inside.

Upon request, TLS engineered a fluid, cloud-like lighting structure for the Montreal location. The installation acts as a primary architectural anchor, guiding customer journeys across levels while establishing a soft, inviting atmosphere.

Technical Deep Dive: What Makes LumiCloud™ Bespoke Unique?

Traditional custom ceiling light fixtures present structural challenges. Heavy acrylic diffusers, rigid steel framing, and complex suspension hardware quickly overload ceiling grids and complicate field installation. LumiCloud™ Bespoke eliminates these constraints through patented tensioned LED engineering.

Substrate-Free Tensile Structure

LumiCloud™ Bespoke utilizes a lightweight tensioning mechanism that weighs just 70 grams per square foot. By eliminating heavy structural backings, architects can specify large-scale luminous installations without requiring costly ceiling reinforcements. Despite its low mass, the structural tension system supports load capacities up to 500 lbs, accommodating integrated building services without sag or deformation.

Hotspot-Free Uniform Illumination

Achieving smooth, edge-to-edge luminance across large surfaces requires precise optical spacing. TLS customizes LED board pitch based on diffuser material selection and cavity setback distance. Combined with continuous, high-transmittance stretch diffusers, LumiCloud™ Bespoke generates completely uniform surfaces free of dark spots, visible diode lines, or harsh shadows.

Seamless Large-Format Integration

Conventional ceiling light fixtures are limited by rigid dimensions, creating disjointed grid lines across large retail floors. LumiCloud™ Bespoke utilizes continuous, wide-span tensioned membranes that eliminate visible seams, frame lines, and structural dividers. This allows architects to create expansive, uninterrupted planes of light that seamlessly conform to custom curved footprints and complex ceiling plans.

Bridging Architectural Vision and In-House Manufacturing

Custom lighting concepts often face value engineering during late-stage development due to budget overruns or supply chain friction. TLS prevents performance degradation through vertically integrated local manufacturing.

End-to-end manufacturing workflow, spanning 3D design, R&D laboratory testing, in-house fabrication, factory pre-assembly, and logistics management.

End-to-End Control Over Quality and Schedules

TLS designs, engineers, and fabricates every system component in-house. Maintaining total ownership eliminates third-party coordination delays and quality discrepancies.

  • Custom Geometry: Fabricated into organic free-form clouds, continuous wave patterns, circular rings, or crisp geometric frames.
  • Dynamic Lighting Engines: Compatible with Tunable White, Dim-to-Warm, and RGBW pixel-controlled LED systems.
  • Seamless Field Assembly: Engineered modules pre-assemble off-site to reduce contractor labor hours and ensure precise fitment on-site.

Scalable Design Identity: TLS Across Lululemon Locations

The Downtown Montreal flagship highlights the adaptability of LumiCloud™ Bespoke, built upon years of successful implementations across North America. Lululemon consistently partners with TLS to establish a cohesive visual identity while adapting fixture geometries to unique regional floor plans.

Key Lululemon project locations featuring TLS architectural lighting include:

Lululemon Oakridge (Vancouver, BC): Custom luminous forms tailored for high-end West Coast retail aesthetics.

  • Lululemon First Colony Mall (Sugar Land, TX): Large-format ceiling installations delivering broad, even ambient coverage.
  • Lululemon St-Bruno (CF Promenades St-Bruno, QC): Fluid stretch-lighting ceiling structures enhancing regional store rollouts.
  • Lululemon Fashion Valley (San Diego, CA): Bright, high-CRI continuous illumination matching sunny Southern California retail spaces.
  • Lululemon Williamsburg (Brooklyn, NY): Industrial-chic architectural lighting integrated into a trendy urban storefront.

Elevate Your Next Architectural Project

Lululemon’s downtown Montreal flagship location proves that architectural lighting is more than functional infrastructure — it is an expressive design medium that defines spatial identity. By combining lightweight tensioning systems, custom 3D geometries, acoustic performance, and fully controlled in-house manufacturing, LumiCloud™ Bespoke gives architects and designers total creative freedom.
